JUST ME
VOGUE’S JUST ME REVISITED!
By Carol Stover
The year 2002 is a monumental one for The Vogue Doll Company. In addition to
presenting our beloved Ginny, this year we are opening a new chapter in our doll
making history dating back to the 1920’s. For the first time since the
1970’s, Vogue is adding a new doll to the line. However, we are not straying
from Ginny’s family, for this doll is one of Ginny’s earlier cousins, and
one of the very first dolls ever dressed by Vogue’s founder, Mrs. Jennie
Graves. Our new doll is a remarkable recreation of Vogue’s Just Me doll
dressed so beautifully by Mrs. Graves in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
VINTAGE JUST ME JUST TOO CUTE!
Perhaps you are already familiar with the story of Jennie Graves. She was a
talented housewife living in Boston’s suburbs with a passion for costume
designing, in particular for doll costume designing. She had two daughters, June
and Virginia and practiced her talents on their dolls, and later on neighbor’s
dolls. Over time, Mrs. Graves’ work became so popular that she decided to go
into business, founding The Vogue Doll Shoppe in her Sommerville, Massachusetts
home in 1922. At first Mrs. Graves imported bisque dolls from Europe in all
sizes from famous doll makers. However, one of the most popular dolls imported
in the 1920’s was a small 'Just Me' doll from Germany designed by Armand
Marseille with bisque heads and jointed composition bodies. If you have ever
seen one of these dolls, you will never forget their sweet little faces with
apple cheeks and glass sleep eyes described as either 'flirty' or glancing to
the side. The doll’s features were, of course, hand painted, some with thin
lashes painted above and beneath the eyes, others with none. Most had a single,
stubby short brow mark painted above the eyes. Marseille’s bisque molding
achieved fine face detail, such as a petite little button nose, but perhaps the
most distinctive feature of his Just Me doll was her tiny pursed red mouth. Some
see a very serious look in her little expression, but others are equally
convinced that there is a hint of a smile.
The little Just Me doll wigs were usually curly mohair styles in brunette or
blonde tones. Some wigs were set in short curls and close around the face, but
others had long ringlet style curls. It is very rare to find a Just Me boy doll,
but they did exist. If one is lucky enough to fine a Just Me boy doll today,
they will likely have a short ear length wig and be dressed in costumes that
matched their twin sister. Short pants costumes were popular for the boys, and
many were similar to the costumes Mrs. Graves later designed for her composition
8" Toddles dolls in the 1930’s and 1940’ s. The costumes were closed
with hooks and eyes; buttons were not typical Vogue closures.
The Just Me dolls had high quality composition bodies jointed at the legs, arms
and head. The doll’s right arm was bent at the elbow, which gave her an active
look, and was nice for posing. The cheeks were brightly blushed as were the
knees.

Mrs. Graves specialized in doll dress designing and her little hand-tailored
Just Me ensembles usually reflected the styles of the day with a few storybook
exceptions. She used only the finest fabrics, trims and accessories for their
costumes, including matching hats, bows, purses and pom-pom ties shoes. Many of
the costumes had hand-embroidered edging, smocking or appliqués, etc., and she
proudly sewed her Vogue Doll Shoppe tag into the back of each dress at the neck
or waist seam. After a while, she recruited friends and neighbors to help her
sew the dresses, but she always supplied the fabric and a sample costume to
insure Vogue’s quality and style. The doll’s leatherette shoes were
typically tied with attached pom-pom laces worn with socks. When a doll survives
to present day, the costume very often does too, which speaks to Mrs. Graves'
well-made and quality styles.
VOGUE’S 2002 JUST ME REISSUE
Now that we have covered the history of Vogue’s vintage Just Me doll, let us
introduce you to our reissue of this wonderful dolls. She has been faithfully
recreated in sizes after the 1920’s doll. We have been careful not to change
her sweet, pouty look, her wonderful wig styles, or her beautiful eyes. She is,
like the original, created with a bisque head and the finest composition
reproduction material. Her wigs are mohair and her costumes are replicated from
original designs using the finest Swiss organdy. These costumes are creating
quite a sensation as they, just like Mrs. Graves’ vintage doll, use the finest
fabrics and trims that are fully coordinated. Each doll is individually numbered
and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
